In the Octave of the Epiphany

Dear Fathers, Friends in Christ,

1 John 4:7-10
 Psalm 72:1-2, 3-4, 7-8
 Mark 6:34-44

When Jesus saw the vast crowd, He was moved with pity for them.

Sometimes, when I read this, I wonder what it was that Jesus saw. Certainly He saw the people standing before Him. Certainly He saw the hungry, the sick, the poor, and the needy. But do you think, being God, He saw you and me? Do you think He saw through time to the vast crowd of followers who were to come after?

We are part of the vast crowd He saw. We are the ones He feeds -- not with bread and fish, but with His own Self, His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity! Jesus had pity on us every day. He gives to us each day that we might choose to make it our daily bread.

Let us accept what Jesus gives us in His mercy and in His deep love for us. Let us accept His gift of Self which is the Food that feeds our souls.
