Jeremiah 2:1-3, 7-8, 12-13
Psalm 36:6-7ab, 8-9, 10-11
Matthew 13:10-17
Today's readings reveal to us why mankind is in such a perilous state.
Collectively we have spurned the Lord, ignored His Word, and forged ahead as if nothing depends on Him.
For those who seek His wisdom and desire to do as He wills, it is abundantly clear what is happening and why, and that the only viable and enduring solution is to turn to the Lord with all our hearts, and repent and believe the Good News.
Yet, the solution evades most of us and Isaiah's prophecy is fulfilled:
They hear but do not understand--they have closed their eyes, lest they see or hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and be converted.
It makes for a very gloomy outlook, doesn't it? Yet, God's grace and power are greater than mankind's sinfulness, and can and will triumph in the end.
In the meantime though, there are many trials and difficulties and reasons to lose heart, but don't!
See with your God-given eyes. Hear with your God-given ears, and know with your God-given heart that the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven have been revealed to you. You know His mercy and love and defense to the upright of heart, and to His friends.
