On the Saturday after the 4th Sunday in Lent

Dear Fathers, Friends in Christ,

So a division occurred in the crowd because of him.
- John 7:43

A friend who lives in a religious community once told me that some of the most heated conflicts that arise in the group involve issues like how to decorate the Christmas tree and what types of food to fast from in Lent. In all honesty, I was a little relieved to hear that the members of a community I respect and admire were just as capable as me of placing so much importance on minor issues.

I also find it reassuring that even when Jesus walked the earth there was considerable debate among the religious authorities and the people about his mission and identity. In light of that, we shouldn't be surprised or discouraged when disputes both substantial and trivial occur in our day. When all is said and done, what is of utmost importance is that we honestly pray for an open and humble heart as we try to live our lives in greater faith, hope and love.
