Feria for the Saturday - working for change

Dear Fathers, Friends in Christ,

'Working for Change'

Your prophets had for you
false and specious visions;
They did not lay bare your guilt,
to avert your fate;
They beheld for you in vision
false and misleading portents.
Lamentations 2:14

From now on, everything will be different. We hear this message a lot. We hear it from politicians promising a new social climate. We hear it from advertisers, promising us happiness if we buy their product. It's enticing. Who doesn't want to live in a better world? Who doesn't want to be richer, healthier, more attractive?

What these promises have in common, however, is that they are (suspiciously) exactly what we want to hear. They offer change, but they don't ask us to change--results without effort. The gospel is not like that. Jesus challenges us. He demands that we identify the ways we are culpable and in need of conversion. He calls us to the hard work of change.
