Dear Fathers , Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
Psalm 149:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6a and 9b
"The Lord takes delight in His people."
Isn't that something! God, who created everything and has access to it all, finds delight in us?
Self-knowledge is an important element in spiritual growth, but it can lead to a sad and lopsided conclusion if we just consider our sinfulness without recognizing God's mercy. That's why Holy Scripture like today's Responsorial Psalm, which reminds us directly and not just tangentially that God loves us, is so wonderful!
Granted, the depth of God's love goes far beyond just being delighted in us. Even so, the word "delight" makes such a pleasant sound in our ears.
And how, you ask, could God ever delight in us who are sinners? The answer is easy. Tape it on your mirror, a wonderful homilist last week encouraged, so that when you look into it to wash your face in the morning, you will be reminded of an awesome reality:
"YOU are created in the image and likeness of God!"
