Feria for the Thursday

Dear Fathers, Brothers, Sisters in Christ,

1 Samuel 18:6-9;19:1-7
 Psalm 56:2-3, 9-10a, 10b-11, 12-13
 Mark 3:7-12

What a wonder it is that we have Holy Scripture!

I think it is something we often take for granted. Yet for those who believe, it is in truth, the Word of God.

Though originally written in languages few of us understand, translations, we learn, strive to retain their meaning and tone. With this in mind, I am awed by how sentimental (for lack of a better word) God is where we are concerned.

Today's Responsorial Psalm illustrates this point, telling us that God has stored every one of our tears in His flask. It is an image so touching and tender, like that of a mother keeping each one of her child's crayoned pictures or a lover safeguarding a lock of the beloved's hair.

So, when you read the Sacred Scriptures, let God's Word have its effect. Let it summon before the eyes of your heart, our God, who loves us so sweetly and completely that He collects each one of our tears like a precious jewel and stores them in His flask -- forever.
