Dear Fathers, Friends in Christ,
Christ, in today's gospel, describes the two great commandments. Love of God and love of neighbour.
(Matthew 22:34-40)
It was such a relief to the people, after living under so many restrictive rules; and it sounded so simple to follow. We know however, that these rules are not always so easy to follow in real life.
Perhaps giving consideration to our own nature might help. Scripture tells us that God will never deny us, even if we deny Him, as we are created by Him, and He cannot deny Himself. God is Love and He loves each of us. If He loves me and my neighbour enough to die for our salvation, then who am I, a mere creature, to turn against my neighbour? This is not so hard to understand; but it is hard to follow at times. May we respond favourably to the grace that God gives us to do so. It is a liberating experience!
