Dear Fathers, Friends in Christ,
Luke 8:1-3
The gospel for today describes how Jesus journeyed through towns and villages, teaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God, and that many women accompanied Him and the twelve apostles, providing for them out of their own resources.
Imagine the effort put forth by these women to keep at least fifteen to twenty people fed as they moved about the region. Today, even with fast food places and refrigerators and microwaves in motel rooms, meals can be a challenge with that number of people.
Today's gospel is like a glimpse "behind the scenes." Spreading the word, then and even now, doesn't "just happen." It often takes the coordinated effort of many people. Those charitable actions, meeting basic needs, etc., are important parts of spreading the gospel. Jesus reminded the people of His time that, as long as you give even a cup of water in His name, you are giving it to Him. That message holds true even today.
