Dear Fathers, Friends in Christ,
Luke 8:1-3
The gospel for today is extremely significant, not only to establish the identity of Christ, but also to remind us of our own vocation as children of God. When Christ asks St. Peter, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter responds that He is the Messiah. Our root, our being, is not only natural, from our parents, but of God. We are children of the Father.
We see the images of children and adults in the media, immigrants and refugees fleeing from harm's way and we weep at their plight, uprooted from family, homes, friends and their traditions. They might be uprooted, for a time at least, from their natural connections, but they remain forever children of God, loved by Him always, just as we are.
Let us rejoice in the knowledge that we are forever children of the Father and pray that we bear that title responsibly and with humility
