Dear Fathers, Friends in Christ,
'Building a Stronghold'
You have been my stronghold,
my refuge in the day of distress.
Psalm 59:17
When we think of a stronghold, we might picture a medieval stone fortress with a drawbridge, a moat full of hungry crocodiles and armed guards on the roof. It's hard to think of a stronghold in modern terms, yet we must. It is just as necessary today as it was in ancient times.
When we spend time in prayer, honouring God's presence and power, we create a space within ourselves. That space is holy, quiet, peaceful and safe. We practice going to that stronghold within during ordinary times. We make a habit of it, so we know exactly where it is and how to get there. Then, when extraordinary times are suddenly upon us, we move to the stronghold immediately, without thinking. We know where we are safe.
The world can be an uncertain and dangerous place. We need a refuge in times of trouble. Prayer takes us there.
