Feria for the Friday

Dear Fathers, Friends in Christ,

'What Captivates Your Heart?'

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal.
Matthew 6:19

As I drive around, I see a lot of self-storage facilities dotting the landscape. There are three such facilities within a one-mile radius of my home. They all promise cleanliness (no moths or decay!) and security (no thieves can break in and steal your stuff). Storage facilities are a sign of our times. They tell us we are a mobile people--and we own a lot of stuff! When I hear Jesus' words today, I wonder: What would he think about all our storage facilities?

The point is not that material things are bad, of course. The point is that some things are much more important than material things. Like what? Like family, friends, community, compassion, integrity, peace, forgiveness. And what we treasure the most will inevitably captivate our heart. What captivates your heart?
