Feria for the Friday -

Dear Fathers, Friends in Christ,

'Trusting in God's Will'

[Jesus said to his disciples,] "If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"
Luke 11:13

We may feel let down by Jesus' final words today. We want so much to believe that if we are faithful to prayer and trust wholeheartedly in God, we will get what we ask for. Instead, Jesus concludes that we will get "the Holy Spirit." Oh! we may think. Was Jesus playing with us? Of course not. For if "the Father in heaven" gives us "the Holy Spirit," guess what? In that case, we will only ask that our Father's will be done, no matter what we think we want. Whenever we pray for something, perhaps our prayer should end with, "Of course, loving Father, you may know better; your will be done. Amen."
