In the Octave of the Epiphany

Dear Fathers, Friends in Christ

1 John 4:19--5:4
 Psalm 72:1-2, 14 and 15bc, 17
 Luke 4:14-22

And His commandments are not burdensome. (1 John 5:3)

In today's First Reading, St. John the Evangelist tells us that God's commandments are not burdensome. It is a lesson that too often is learned AFTER we discover that it's NOT keeping them that's burdensome.

Anyone who seriously reflects on what has caused them unhappiness will no doubt come to the conclusion that it is their sinfulness and the consequences of that sinfulness.

Let us then rejoice, the Lord has asked something of us that is not a burden, but something that brings us joy and freedom!

"For the love of God is this, that we keep His commandments."
(1 John 5:3)
