Dear Fathers, Friends in Christ,
Acts 3:1-10
Psalm 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8-9
Luke 24:13-35
Before Jesus was put to death, there were some who believed Him to be either a prophet, or the one who would save Israel from Roman rule. The disciples in this morning’s gospel certainly believed that Jesus would be the latter. They were confounded that Jesus should have so much potential, and had come to such a terrible end at the same time.
The Risen Jesus had no such qualms about this contradiction, and proceeded to tell them as the account says: "Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He interpreted to them what referred to Him in all the Scriptures." Thus, Jesus reinterpreted the whole Old Testament in of Himself. He was, in other words, the fulfillment of what God had told His people through Moses and all the prophets.
Sometimes, when we suffer, we naturally wonder why. Jesus shows us in today’s gospel that the answer lies in seeing our lives being reinterpreted in light of Him.
It is in light of His life, death and resurrection, that the mystery of our lives and our sufferings will be revealed to us, just as Jesus revealed to these two disciples that the mystery of His life is revealed to those who are open to Him, and who see Him anew in the breaking of the bread.
