Feria on the Friday - about storing treasures on this earth

My first introduction to Anglicanism was in the Church of Saint John and Saint Philip in The Hague Holland in the sixties.

Dear Fathers, Friends in Christ,

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth. . . .
But store up treasures in heaven. . . .
 For where your treasure is,
there also will your heart be. (Matthew 6:19ff)

These days, everybody's looking for a sure thing, something they can count on for the long haul. People go after money and power, they seek out fame and all kinds of possessions, you  name it! But all of those things are transitory. As soon as we die, we leave it all behind. Then what?

Jesus gives us the answer in today's gospel. He points out that earthly treasures are passing. They don't last. Heavenly treasures, on the other hand, do last forever! We can count on heavenly riches for all eternity. We'll never have to give them up, because they're the real deal.

Let's take a little inventory today. Where is your treasure stored? Where is your heart? It's something to think about.

O Lord,
help me to store up my treasures in heaven!
Help me to see the value of spiritual goods,
and give me a deep love for spiritual treasure in heaven.
For that is where I want my heart to be. Amen.
